Let Truth Be The Prejudice documents the life and work of W. Eugene Smith, a man whose work expanded the range and depth of photography, bringing new aesthetic and moral power to the photo essay. Smith was born in 1918 in Wichita, Kansas, and raised according to traditional American values, believing in the nobility of America and the injustice of war. He began taking pictures with his mother's camera while still a boy and continued this practice throughout his schooling. In 1937 his burning ambition took him to New York City, where his rise as a professional photographer was meteoric.

Before he was twenty-one, Smith had placed hundreds of photographs in the major picture magazines of the time. Dramatic composition, a hard-edged brilliance, and a mastery of lighting were evident even in this early work. But the moment of true ground-breaking would occur during World War II. It was when Smith went ashore with the Marines at Saipan, Guam, and Iwo Jima that his work and his sense of moral responsibility came together. He wrote: "Each time I pressed the shutter release it was a shouted condemnation hurled with the hope that they might echo through the minds of men in the future-- causing them caution and remembrance and realization." Breaking from the concerns of the mass media, his personal priorities were born. Smith's war photographs earned him repeated and justified comparisons to Mathew Brady. His coverage of American prisoner-of-war camps helped convince the Japanese that their fears were exaggerated, and stopped the suicide of thousands of terrified citizens upon the advance of American troops. This would not be the last time that Smith's work would change as well as document history.

After the war, Smith became a staff photographer at Life magazine, where he created many of his most famous photographs. The essays "Country Doctor" and "Nurse Midwife" influenced an entire generation. Smith moved from mine villages in Great Britain to Albert Schweitzer in French Equatorial Africa to a sweeping study of Spanish village life. At a meeting of the Ku Klux Klan he created haunting images of hatred, fear, and bigotry, which beautifully counterpoint the humanity of his great Life0 essays. Smith also showed his skill at portraiture, shooting many of the luminaries of the time.

His frustrations with commercial publishing finally led to a split with Life magazine in 1954, a true case of "artistic differences." He devoted his remaining twenty-four years to independent projects. It was a period of intense personal suffering and poverty. During these years he pushed one project, "Pittsburgh," virtually to the breaking point and along the way created photography's greatest urban landscape.

His last great essay, "Minamata," depicted both the human suffering caused by mercury poisoning in a Japanese industrial port, and helped put an end to that pollution. A severe beating by factory thugs aggravated his already failing health and on October 15, 1978, he died. Over the span of forty driven years, Smith dreamed on an epic scale and his accomplishments were heroic. He once wrote: "Never have I found the limits of the photographic potential. Every horizon, upon being reached, reveals another beckoning in the distance. Always, I am on the threshold."

Here is the definitive work on Smith's life and work, containing his major photo-essays, the portrait work, and spanning his brilliant career from his days aboard an aircraft carrier, through the breadth of Pittsburgh, to the human suffering explicit in his last great essay in Minamata. All these images have been painstakingly reproduced to insure the greatest quality in testament to Smith's genius.

Moral passion and photographic truth were inseparable to Gene Smith. He pursued both and the measure of his greatness is that he compromised neither. His achievements were realized at no small cost to himself and those around him. The juxtaposition of picture groups seems to parallel the emotional upheavals and periods of calm in his life: World War II, rural America, Ku Klux Klan, Spain and Africa (Albert Schweitzer), the mammoth Pittsburgh project, gentle views from his Manhattan window, jazz artists, an unpublished Haiti essay, Japan (Minamata). The pictures (accompanied by lengthy quotations from Smith) speak eloquently of his vision, mission, and craftsmanship. Unfortunately, Maddow's essay adds far more than we need to know about Smith's personal relationships, by way of a tiresome pastiche taken from the thousands of documents at the Center for Creative Photography. Being that I was experiencing a particularly difficult time in my child's life (or in mine, depending on your perspective) - the so-called terrible twos - I was hoping that this book might have some magic answers. It doesn't. It basically covers the same ground as other parenting books, a combination of, say, Lise Eliot, and the Happiest Toddler on the Block. The suggestions are hard to implement, as acknowledged by the author, when you have been so pushed to the edge by sleeplessness and tantrums so as to have become a toddler yourself.What I did like about the book were the cartoons and pictures, and the fact that it covers all ages and stages, so I can see myself returning to it. However, the techniques were spread across all ages all the time, so it was harder to focus in on what might be appropriate for me and my child at this very moment.Overall, I like the general ideas/principles behind the book, but I'm not sure that it stands out in the field of parenting books based on similar research.

This book is part of the "Brain Balance" predatory pop neuroscience being marketed to overwhelmed parents of challenging children. It was recommended by a child behavioral psychologist who told me she recommends it to all parents, and I'm disappointed that she thinks this book could ever be helpful. I hoped that, after the introduction, there would be practical advice that worked, even if the fake science used to describe it was bunk. Unfortunately not the case. If you wade through the (uncited) fake science, the unprofessional, awkward cartoon illustrations, and the little vignettes of parenting challenges (which are described but unsresolved), you get . . . nothing. This is a slick package without a product inside.I'm also a desperate parent, looking for a lifeline. There's no lifeline here; just lies: page after page of line drawings showing hands and houses to illustrate the crock ideas of "upstairs and downstairs brains" and "left brains and right brains." It's fine to discuss and classify human behaviors and interests using the left/right concept as a metaphor, but don't sell us a miracle cure for a problem that isn't real. Brain "de-integration" is not the cause of challenging childhood behaviors, and while it's nice to think that we could buy a book that fixes our children's brains, it's not that easy.You want the entirety of the book's advice?-When your kid is on the verge of a tantrum, don't try to shut them down with a rational explanation of why they shouldn't be throwing a tantrum. Let them have their feelings, and work from thereThat's it. The entire book. More helpful books that start with that tidbit and give evidence-based advice are Ross Greene's "The Explosive Child," Jim and Charles Fay's "Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood," and Alan E. Kazdin's "The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child." None of which have worked a miracle in my child's behavior, but they have each, in their own way, helped me to adjust my parenting and lower my stress level as we progress through our new normal. "The Whole-Brain Child" is marketed to the same audience, but has nothing to offer.

So important! I have 6 kids and am assistant director at a Daycare and this is INVALUABLE! Understanding how the brain works from a psychology standpoint in a way that helps anyone to get it is so great. I got the audible version, the hard copy and the workbook and am putting the material together to teach the teachers at our center along with Parent Effectiveness Training and The how to talk series. This is a life changer and It has given me some tools to help some autistic kids in our center as well as understand myself and other adults I know!

I think overall this is a good book, however most of the information (at least for me) was common sense/ information I was already aware of. I was a little disappointed, I would recommend this book if you have never been around children/ totally new to dealing with kids otherwise I think there are better options out there.

This is such an eye-opening book that explains why children act the way that they do, and what is going on in their brains during the process. I have printed out the helpful "Refridgerator sheet" at the end of the book and hung it on my fridge. We view it often to remind ourselves of the most healthy ways to handle and guide our 2-year-old. As a parent who refuses to spank as a form of discipline, this gives me so many other safe, and healthy alternatives. Also, and most importantly, this helps me to understand how her brain works, and why she acts a certain way, or why she is unable to act in other ways. I believe that if I stick to the advice and practices in this book, that my daughter and I will have a stronger and healthier relationship.

Seriously love this book. My daughter is 16 months old and there was a lot of very usually information for a child her age. I wish I had read this when she was first born in order to anticipate changes in her behavior and how to handle them rather than waiting until we realized we had a child that actually needed a little more than food and sleep and cuddles and diaper changes. I can see this being a useful book to revisit every few years as she grows. I learned some about myself and my husband while reading this as well. Very accessible and well written, really can't recommend it enough.

The book is very easy to read and understand a concepts, I love that it gives real life examples and solutions on how to approach your kids, as a parent of 3 I could relate to quite a few stories in the book.
