It's great that publisher Udon has translated the original Japanese artbook ベヨãƒãƒƒã‚¿è¨å®šè³‡æ–™é›† (The Eyes of Bayonetta). The Japanese edition went out of stock pretty quickly and the DVD was region coded to Japan.So what's the difference between the Japanese and English edition?The English edition is a hardcover book and comes with a DVD that's not region coded. Cover art is different. What's missing are the slipcase and the two posters featuring the bosses. The two posters are quite good so it's too bad they weren't included here.Since the book is just a translated edition, the review that follows is largely adapted from the review of the Japanese edition artbook.The Eyes of Bayonetta is the official artbook for Bayonetta, one of the crazier Japanese games I've played. It features concept art for the characters, Angels, Infernal Demons, weapons, accessories and environment.This is mainly a character design book with designs. You'll see Bayonetta, Jeanne, Enzo, Rodin, Luka, Cereza, Balder and other characters. There are lots of coloured sketches as well as high resolution character graphics, featuring plenty of poses and costumes including many discarded ideas. Costume design is definitely one of the highlights. Notes and artists' scribbles are all translated.This game has some really unique and exquisite enemy designs. The concepts are out of the world, mixing angels and demons with extra shiny metal. The designs are intricate and requires some time to explore, although sometimes there can be too much things going on, which can get confusing visually.If you like weapon designs, there's a whole chapter on it. There are guns, blades, claws and torture weapons. I love the weapons in this game. They look stylish and incredibly powerful.The chapter on environment art is a bit limited considering there are more sets featured in the game. However, the art is beautiful and detailed. There are buildings, architecture, vehicles, statues and all those design elements on walls and pillars.The DVD has 73 minutes on the making of Bayonetta. This is one of the rare video game artbooks that come with a making-of DVD so it's a fantastic bonus.Highly recommended to fans of the game and those who like the art style.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. LOVE this book. As someone that's thinking about potentially getting into concept art, this book has been eye-opening. It's my first art book, and I'll make sure it's not my last.The pages are thick, the cover is badass but most of all, I loved reading the artists comments about the process. Such as it taking forever to settle on Bayonetta's design and the many, many, MANY re-designs they did to try to come up with something great. It gave me a better appreciation for the pre-production side of things.I can't wait to get the Bayonetta 2 artbook once it's translated later this year!
This art book is of course for huge fans. Also if you would like a glimpse into how they came to Bayonetta's design. This applies for various other characters and enemies but Bayonetta is the star and has the most coverage. It's great reading the comments from the artists and other team members about the process. I would love for there to be longer and more indepth especially for angel and demon designs, but what is here is already amazing.
I got this art book a few weeks ago and i'm very happy that i bought it. It contains lots of art work that you won't find anywhere else. Everything found in the 1st Bayonetta game is shown in this book. From characters to items to even accesories. The comments posted by the staff at the end of the book are also very nice to read. All in all a great book for anyone who loves Bayonetta and wants to have a more detailed look into the origins of her 1st game.
Its a winderful eddition to my bayonetta collection (since its supports the actual bayo artists and creators), as well as answers alot of questions i havent been able to find in the game. For example, its pretty cool to know Rodin is the creator of Balder and many other Sages'/angels' weapons before he was banished from paradiso.
As an Artist and Gamer. this was a must have for our collection. I bought this as a companion to the PS3 game we bought recently, any game that gets you to buy a new game system just to see the art, and play the game....well, when I saw there was an art book to go with it DAMN!The concept art, and design work acceded my exceptions.I have all of the "Blizzard" World of Warcraft art books to date, and this book surpasses even them in production value.If you like Bayonetta, heck even if you have not even played the game! This art book is a worthy addition to any collection.
Significant damage to the bottom of the book from shipping. Creases up the cover and is definitely noticeable. Actual contents are fantastic and exactly what you would expect, though a little pricey for the amount of content you receive even for Amazon standards.
I purchased this for my daughter for her birthday because she is a huge fan of the game and is an art major. I sat and looked at the entire book with her and was amazed at the details. The art is beautiful in itself, and it explains in detail about the characters,weapons, and settings in the game. She absolutely loves it. Money well spent if your a fan or know one.
