Exceptionally well written. The author's empathy, uncertainties, desires, struggles, triumphs all transcend any single point in time. Review would still be 5 stars if this came out in 1970 or 2020.If I were a philosophy, American history, or english teacher, this book would be a pillar of next year's syllabus. If you liked Into The Wild, this book has similar existentialist and modern progressive American themes, but with Walking To Listen you are directly listening to the author's own transformation and reflection, each step of the way.
Andrew combines moving and insightful interviews with lyrical descriptions of the world around him. His experiences in Alabama and with the Navajo are unforgettable. At the same time, the book is highly introspective, taking us on an emotional journey every bit as arduous as his trek across America. My biggest complaint is that while Andrew makes it to the Pacific Ocean, he seems to have run out of mental energy when he crossed into California. There is no mention of Manzanar, the Japanese internment camp site he passed right by, nor a word about crossing Yosemite (or John Muir, who also walked and listened), one of the most beautiful places on earth. I don't mind that he did not talk with tech workers in Silicon Valley, but he did miss a golden opportunity to listen to farmers and farm workers while crossing the San Joaquin Valley. Fortunately, "Listening" has a wonderful ending. There are also too many Walt Whitman/Rainer Maria Rilke quotations, but only one mention of Peter Jenkins, who wrote "A Walk Across America" 40 years ago. Finally, the hardback edition of the book includes a wonderful hand-drawn map of his journey, but sadly, no pictures (Peter Jenkins' are wonderful). I could not find any pictures on Andrew's website either.Yes, I have written more about the book's weak points, but that is because it is so close to being one for the ages. I am still giving it five stars and hoping that my daughter will read it.
This is an incredible book. It made me a better person. Andrew writes beyond his age, with insights and observations that made me think, laugh, and cry. It's a perfect balance of "inside" -- some musings I identify with, some I learn from -- and "outside" -- there are vivid descriptions of landscapes, homes, and personalities that make you feel like you're on the road, too. You won't put this book down.I had the pleasure of attending college with Andrew, and he's a truly positive and warm person. It's no surprise that so many strangers welcomed him into their homes, and it clearly afforded him experiences few others would have.Highly recommend this book to anyone of all ages, races, genders, and belief systems!
I picked up this book at the library not expecting it to be anything great. Let me tell you it was great. I could not get over how well Andrew expressed himself...like an old soul in a 23 year old body. And his wit....is priceless. In response to the one reviewer who harshly criticized his treatment of a young man he encountered...he admitted he was wrong and felt ashamed by his actions. He is human for God's sake and he owns up to it. I loved it all and also did not want it to end. I bought it for my son's (new) girlfriend for a Christmas present! It's rare to read a book with so many different real life encounters, insights and wisdom. It's a remarkable book.
Five things I loved about Walking to Listen1. You could FEEL Andrew growing up along his journey. The first 150 pages were mesmerizing.2.Andrew is never shy to write about the EMOTIONAL life of his journey.3. Andrew is “ teachable†- a very nice quality.4. As a young man he has extraordinary insights into human nature.5. He is VERY honest about his white, male, heterosexual privilege in making this journey.——— I found the the verbatim italics interviews between chapters distracting and redundant.—— I would have edited out 50 pages- a 321 page book would have been PERFECT!——-I would liked to have known where and how and how often AF went to the bathroom! It could have been done in a humorous way. That’s it.Congrats Andrew!
Walking to Listen was required reading for my son in a high school class, and after he finished his assignment, I pulled it up on my Kindle to kill some time while between Vine review reads. I was hooked immediately. Following this young man on his year-long trek across the United States made me remember what it feels like to be young and still open to new perspectives on what it means to lead a meaningful life. His fearlessness and ability to connect with those he encountered on his journey, without being judgmental, is truly admirable. I also appreciated the way in which he related his experiences to the poetry and philosophies of the great writers he studied in college. What a credit to the much-maligned Millennial generation, as the author shows us all how taking the road less traveled can truly make all the difference.
My granddaughter was assigned this book as an 'all school reading project' at her school. I decided to read it also.Whether from her 15 year old perspective or my 76 year old perspective there is so much to process and learn along with Andrew from those he 'listens to'. I wish I had taken the time to ask some of these questions in my youth and to have 'listened' for wisdom. I found the authenticity of the writing refreshing and memorable. Great book. Congrats to the author for being who he is and for sharing that person!
