Exceptionally well written. The author's empathy, uncertainties, desires, struggles, triumphs all transcend any single point in time. Review would still be 5 stars if this came out in 1970 or 2020.If I were a philosophy, American history, or english teacher, this book would be a pillar of next year's syllabus. If you liked Into The Wild, this book has similar existentialist and modern progressive American themes, but with Walking To Listen you are directly listening to the author's own transformation and reflection, each step of the way.

Andrew combines moving and insightful interviews with lyrical descriptions of the world around him. His experiences in Alabama and with the Navajo are unforgettable. At the same time, the book is highly introspective, taking us on an emotional journey every bit as arduous as his trek across America. My biggest complaint is that while Andrew makes it to the Pacific Ocean, he seems to have run out of mental energy when he crossed into California. There is no mention of Manzanar, the Japanese internment camp site he passed right by, nor a word about crossing Yosemite (or John Muir, who also walked and listened), one of the most beautiful places on earth. I don't mind that he did not talk with tech workers in Silicon Valley, but he did miss a golden opportunity to listen to farmers and farm workers while crossing the San Joaquin Valley. Fortunately, "Listening" has a wonderful ending. There are also too many Walt Whitman/Rainer Maria Rilke quotations, but only one mention of Peter Jenkins, who wrote "A Walk Across America" 40 years ago. Finally, the hardback edition of the book includes a wonderful hand-drawn map of his journey, but sadly, no pictures (Peter Jenkins' are wonderful). I could not find any pictures on Andrew's website either.Yes, I have written more about the book's weak points, but that is because it is so close to being one for the ages. I am still giving it five stars and hoping that my daughter will read it.

This is an incredible book. It made me a better person. Andrew writes beyond his age, with insights and observations that made me think, laugh, and cry. It's a perfect balance of "inside" -- some musings I identify with, some I learn from -- and "outside" -- there are vivid descriptions of landscapes, homes, and personalities that make you feel like you're on the road, too. You won't put this book down.I had the pleasure of attending college with Andrew, and he's a truly positive and warm person. It's no surprise that so many strangers welcomed him into their homes, and it clearly afforded him experiences few others would have.Highly recommend this book to anyone of all ages, races, genders, and belief systems!

I picked up this book at the library not expecting it to be anything great. Let me tell you it was great. I could not get over how well Andrew expressed himself...like an old soul in a 23 year old body. And his wit....is priceless. In response to the one reviewer who harshly criticized his treatment of a young man he encountered...he admitted he was wrong and felt ashamed by his actions. He is human for God's sake and he owns up to it. I loved it all and also did not want it to end. I bought it for my son's (new) girlfriend for a Christmas present! It's rare to read a book with so many different real life encounters, insights and wisdom. It's a remarkable book.

Five things I loved about Walking to Listen1. You could FEEL Andrew growing up along his journey. The first 150 pages were mesmerizing.2.Andrew is never shy to write about the EMOTIONAL life of his journey.3. Andrew is “ teachable” - a very nice quality.4. As a young man he has extraordinary insights into human nature.5. He is VERY honest about his white, male, heterosexual privilege in making this journey.——— I found the the verbatim italics interviews between chapters distracting and redundant.—— I would have edited out 50 pages- a 321 page book would have been PERFECT!——-I would liked to have known where and how and how often AF went to the bathroom! It could have been done in a humorous way. That’s it.Congrats Andrew!

Walking to Listen was required reading for my son in a high school class, and after he finished his assignment, I pulled it up on my Kindle to kill some time while between Vine review reads. I was hooked immediately. Following this young man on his year-long trek across the United States made me remember what it feels like to be young and still open to new perspectives on what it means to lead a meaningful life. His fearlessness and ability to connect with those he encountered on his journey, without being judgmental, is truly admirable. I also appreciated the way in which he related his experiences to the poetry and philosophies of the great writers he studied in college. What a credit to the much-maligned Millennial generation, as the author shows us all how taking the road less traveled can truly make all the difference.

My granddaughter was assigned this book as an 'all school reading project' at her school. I decided to read it also.Whether from her 15 year old perspective or my 76 year old perspective there is so much to process and learn along with Andrew from those he 'listens to'. I wish I had taken the time to ask some of these questions in my youth and to have 'listened' for wisdom. I found the authenticity of the writing refreshing and memorable. Great book. Congrats to the author for being who he is and for sharing that person!

The layman's view of law is that it has to do with justice, and the layman's view of Economics is that it has to do with who gets what. This is not correct. The early legal scholars, Grotius, Pufendorf, Locke and others, despite their disagreements, all stressed that property rights law was justified by the fact that an individual will not invest in the improvement of a valuable resource (land, idea, factory) unless he can expect to enjoy the fruits of this investment, and secure ownership is the best means of ensuring that this is the case. In other words, the legal institution of property rights served to improve economic efficiency, not justice. Or rather, as David Friedman would say, our ideas of the justice of property rights are the effect of the efficiency of the institution of property rights, and not vice versa.Law's Order is a wonderful, exciting, and hugely informative book. It never lowers its standard of rigor (a very high standard), but avoids all mathematical modeling and never makes a silly argument simply because there is some outlandish economic model that supports it. One need not always agree with Friedman in order to appreciate the power of his argumentation and the limpidity of his writing. The most important theoretical term that must be mastered is that of `economic efficiency.' The concept is not simple, and only by many varied examples will the reader come away with an appreciation for the strengths and weaknesses of the concept. Basically, an economic arrangement is efficient if there is no alternative arrangement that can make all individuals, even those not participating directly in the arrangement better off according to their own preferences. We also say that moving from situation A to situation B improves efficiency if the winners from moving to B could compensate the losers so that all are better off.A perfect example of an efficiency improvement is where a firm produces harmful effluents that contribute to polluting the natural environment. A firm that releases harmful effluents can simply be prevented from doing so, thus likely leading to the closing of the firm. However, if the cost to society from, say, a ton of effluent can be accurately measured, the firm can be asked either to pay a price per ton of effluent equal to this cost or cease production. The firm can then find a profit-maximizing level of effluent production, and if profits are positive at this level, the new situation, with a lower level of effluent and a tax on the effluent, may be more efficient than either the original situation or simply closing down the firm.Friedman's central assertion is "the thesis, due to Judge Richard Posner, that the common law, that part of the law that comes not from legislatures but from the precedents created by judges in deciding cases, tends to be economically efficient." (p. 15) Most of the book consists of an extended argument supporting the above statement. If Friedman is correct, and he may well be (I cannot think of an exception to his assertion, although of course I am not a legal scholar in any way), common law is then an incredibly stunningly useful social institution. For instance, many people, especially right-wing ideologues, claim that that free markets are efficient, but economic theory does not support this statement (there are externalities, public goods, increasing returns industries, and dynamic fragilities, all of which reduce the efficiency of markets and may possibly be improved through some non-market intervention). Here we have a true expert in Law and Economics, our author, who claims that the dynamics of common law in America "tends to be economically efficient" with no systematic deviations at all. I come from this book not only marveling at the author's analytical and exegetical skills, but also wondering why common law has this character. Many human social institutions contribute strongly to our success as a species and our happiness as individuals and families, but I know of none other that can truly be said to be efficient, without some systematic deviations from efficiency. Friedman does not say why common law is efficient, and I know of no one who has developed a model to explain this fact.Note that legislative law is often inefficient. For instance, a free market in body parts is illegal in virtually every country around the world. This creates huge inefficiencies. For instance, thousands die each year waiting for kidney transplants from compatible donors, but it is illegal to buy a kidney from a healthy person who would love to sell it, perhaps to by an IPod and a pair of Nike sneakers, or perhaps to pay for a life-saving surgical procedure for his mother. I am sure also there are rich people who would be willing to pay for human eyes that it pleases them to float in a crystal prism while they eat breakfast, and poor people who would gladly give an eye for the money to send their children to decent schools. But these efficiency enhancing exchanges are forbidden by law. According to Friedman, if the issue were left to common law, such exchanges would be allowed, and I cannot see that he is wrong.Of course, this does not mean that all legislated law is inefficient. Indeed, quite the opposite is the case. Consider, for instance, laws that oblige sellers to truthfully represent their wares. Without this sort of law, honest sellers would be driven out of the market by dishonest sellers unless the honest sellers could find an alternative way of guaranteeing the quality of their products (e.g., warranties or reputation). In general there is no way short of government regulation by independent judgmental bodies of experts to achieve this, because when a firm is in financial trouble, it will ineluctably sacrifice long-term profitability in favor of short-term survivability. Experience, in addition, shows that when the level of corruption in a society is low, its government tends to frame and enforce such truth in advertizing laws rather competently. It is a rather difficult exercise in economic modeling to show that truth in advertizing improves efficiency (it does, after all, harm the dishonest seller), but it can usually be done.Product safety regulations, however, are generally inefficient. Take the American FAA, which specifies complex safety regulations for private and commercial airlines. Their philosophy is "one size fits all," so travelers who are willing to take a higher risk of an accident are not permitted to do so. A libertarian would probably suggest that airlines be forced to reveal the risks involved in flying with them, but no regulation beyond that.Friedman's thesis implies that when justice conflicts with efficiency in common law, efficiency always wins out. Friedman supports this statement in two ways. First, we tend to consider a law just when it is efficient. For instance, if a lawnmower manufacturer can prevent a certain type of accident at low cost by installing a flange near the mower blade, but the user cannot prevent the risk of injury through normal prudence, then a common law precedent of holding the producer liable for injuring the user will be perceived as just. However, if the user can avoid injury through normal prudence, but the producer cannot prevent injury through user carelessness, both justice and efficiency will place negligence liability with the user.Friedman's second defense of the efficiency principle is based on a very famous argument first made by Nobel prize economist Ronald Coase in his article "The Problem of Social Cost" in 1960---a paper that really started the whole Law and Economics research area. Coase noted that if one party causes harm to another, and if there are no transactions costs, then In law and economics, the Coase theorem, attributed to Ronald Coase, describes the economic efficiency of an economic allocation or outcome in the presence of externalities. The theorem states that if trade in an externality is possible and there are no transactions costs, bargaining will lead to an efficient outcome regardless of the initial allocation of property rights. Therefore the careful and unambiguous specification of property rights, which can be accomplished in common law through precedence, will promote efficiency.Consider, for instance, the issue that Coase dealt with before publishing his 1960 paper: eliminating interference between radio stations in the broadcast frequencies they use. He reasoned that so long as the law clearly stated who has rights to what (for instance, the conditions under which a new radio station can broadcast on a certain frequency band), then bargaining among broadcasters would eventually lead the right to broadcast in the hands of the entrepreneur who stands to gain the most from broadcasting on that frequency band by putting the radio station to its most economically valued use. Of course it matters to the broadcasters which one initially has the right, but standard property rights law (e.g., the Lockean right to appropriate from nature by mixing one's labor with an unutilized resource, plus the justice of voluntary exchange) might well speak to this problem.Perhaps the Coase Theorem might be the basis for explaining why common law is efficient and why efficiency tends to justify patterns of ownership. At any rate, I am sure that most readers will find this book very valuable, and if there is a major critique of Friedman's argument that I have not expressed, perhaps a reader will relay this to me in a comment.

Law's Order was the primary text in my Economic Analysis of the Law class in law school, but I think it is sufficiently accessible for the layman, which is why I'm taking the time to review it. It's the rare book that can be read cover-to-cover and used as a reference with equal success. His target audience in mind (math-phobic law students), Friedman (son of Milton) has stripped the main text of formulas (and, more unfortunately, charts) while leaving markers to indicate where you may find the math on his website. Friedman's prose is informal, (relatively) jargon-free, and interspersed with regular allusions to Vikings, Redcoats, and the King's Messengers to liven things up (Friedman is an ardent recreational medievalist and has written a fantasy novel).Law's Order consists of an extensive introduction to economics as it applies to the law followed by chapters devoted to specific areas of the law (e.g., intellectual property, contracts, etc.) Most of the major areas are covered, although constitutional law (admittedly an immature branch of law & economics), agency law, and business associations are omitted. Game theory is given a cursory look, and public choice (assuming you don't categorize the entirety of law & economics as public choice) and behavioral law & economics are absent. But public choice at least certainly deserves an entire book of its own. As would be expected given Friedman's outside interests, ample historical context is provided. The central dilemma of a survey of law & economics is that there is just so much to cover. That is Law's Order's ultimate failing. Some very valuable topics aren't covered (business associations) and others aren't given proper attention (intellectual property, which is probably worthy of a few chapters). Charts are in my mind a must have in any economics textbook, even one aimed at text-friendly lawyers. A website can only do so much to remedy this, and Friedman's website isn't much to speak of.But those are the sort of things that separate very, very good from perfect. This is still the first book I recommend to anyone looking for an introduction to law & economics (perhaps paired with a public choice primer like Government Failure by Tullock).

Clearly written, good for the smart layperson. A helpful and persuasive introduction to law and economics as concieved by the Chicago school, though some of Friedman's more radical policy suggestions (nearer the end) may make you wonder if we haven't missed something conceptually important; I also recommend Malloy's "Law and Economics" for a broader perspective that offers a critique of the implicit assumptions Friedman's chosen model without endorsing a contrary position. (For those who do want the contrary of Friedman's viewpoint, there's the whole field of critical legal studies out there.)

I had some small problems with the obsession of looking at all problems through the lens of some theoretical optimum; also with the refusal to take into account justice (i.e. in any law, who gets reimbursed matters, but that aspect is ignored for this book). Still a wonderful read for those interested in either law or economics. Beware, some heavy thinking is required.

Simply the best. Highly suggested for anyone with an interest in economics or law.

Excellent conditions! So far a good book!

Quick delivery, exactly as expected.

The book arrived on time, however, it has a black dot along the edge of the book. The ink has seeped into at least 50 pages, and is actually quite annoying because I'm the sort who likes books pristine. However, because i urgently need this book, i suppose it can't be helped.

I love this series. It introduces kids to things slowly, but my second grader has been picking up on this really quickly. She has been playing for about a year. She has only had consistent lessons for a few months now. Prior to this, she had some lessons for about two months and then I just worked her through the first book myself after we moved until I could get her a new teacher. I don’t know that I would be able to do it myself at this level, because although I have a music background, I do not have a background in piano, but she is grasping it with her piano instructor!

As a piano teacher, I love the Faber Piano Adventure books. They provide an excellent range of musical styles and integrate music theory principles in a comprehensible manner to children. While I'm sure the "Music Theory" books Faber provides are excellent, I've found the integrative theory in the "Lesson Books" to be sufficient for my needs. Of all the piano teaching books I've used over the years, I like Faber the most.

Book was fine. Arrived damaged and bent , but Amazon was willing to work with me on replacement. Unfortunately, replacement was also damaged, but book is exactly what we need.

It has good songs and teaches you music.

Received as described. Happy with it! Now if it could just motivate my son to practice!

Didn't realize I was ordering a very old version of these books. Make sure to check the publication year - I wanted the newest updated ones.

very good book. clear and easy to use

The Ecuador Reader: History, Culture, Politics (The Latin America Readers), by Carlos de la Torre Steve Striffler

Review

“The Ecuador Reader is a gateway for understanding the volatile and intriguing history of this complex, multicultural land. From José María Velasco Ibarra’s fiery populism to the politics of a contemporary beauty pageant, the book captures the rich diversity of the country’s past and present. It is a major contribution to the study of the Andean world.”—Catherine M. Conaghan, Queen’s University“The Ecuador Reader offers an intriguing glimpse of the diverse voices and perspectives through which Ecuadorians have engaged the social, political, and cultural challenges of crafting a modern nation. Compiled by two of the leading scholars of Ecuadorian cultural and political thought, the essays in this volume provide testimony to the diversity and creativity of the intellectuals, organizations, communities, and individuals who people Ecuadorian history. The discussions of identity, ethnicity, colonialism, development, culture, and the state found in these pages offer a unique starting point for exploring Ecuador’s historical path from being a colony on the edges of the Inca and Spanish empires to becoming a central player in modern Latin American political debates.”—Deborah Poole, Johns Hopkins University

This book is a collection of essays by individuals with different areas of focus and expertise and knowledge. Some of it was of no interest and other sections were quite enlightening. The sections are not very lengthy and so I could deal with the less interesting articles and not have an entire book to write-off.When reading about the class structure imposed by the Spanish soldiers and the Catholic clergy it was interesting how little has changed over the past 400 years in Ecuador and how much it parallels the treatment of the indigenous people throughout the New World. The subjugation of workers by the elites has not substantially changed nor for that matter their life expectancy. In Ecuador direct slavery and ownership of people and their children was made illegal in 1857 but this permuted into another form of debt slavery where the hacienda (plantation) owners paid their workers next to nothing and controlled the local store which provided credit. A worker could not leave the hacienda to work at another place unless he first paid of the debt and the debt was passed on to his wife and children when he died. I was struck by how much it mirrors the experiences of works in the United States in company towns and plantations and the focus of the elites in taking away the wealth of workers with taxes and debt service and the elimination of their right to file for bankruptcy to begin anew.In the United States we have college graduates who emerge from their schooling heavily in debt and who will likely never own their homes and never have savings for retirement or even for healthcare. With reverse mortgages the banksters are insuring that nothing gets passed on to the next generation so the process can continue in perpetuity. What the book conveys very well is how the elites of Spain through their soldiers and priests tried to replicate the system of lords and peons with controlled villages, in Ecuador. As onerous as the treatment of the indigenous people was by the soldiers and priests it was not as bad as what was done under Columbus as the governor or by the Franscicans in California where their captives (rounded up periodically by soldiers to replace the ones that died) were segregated by sex and served as slave labor in the church fields. And the slaves were not branded as was done by the Church of England at its two plantations in Barbados, but their life expectancy in the missions was less than 10 years. In terms of the culture of Ecuador the book provides no insights and this is to be expected. People who belong to the elite stratum cannot be expected to know or understand the lives of the other 90%. It would have been great had the editors included a section with recommended resources at the end of each chapter.

My wife and I like to visit a country for one month at a time. Prior to these trips, I read a book about the history of the country. I have done this many times.Typically, history books can be very boring and difficult to read and complete. This is an exception. It is not a typical chronological history book, but is a collection of articles about Ecuador and it's history. Articles discuss natives, Incas and the Spanish, Haciendas, agriculture, politics, the Galapagos, women's rights, religion, etc. The articles are written by Ecuadorians, are relatively short and to the point. One nice feature is that if one article is not of interest to you you can skip it and go on to the next without losing continuity. This is not a book for strict historians. However, if you want to learn a lot about Ecuador, past and present, this is a very good book and will hold your interest.

This is a compilation of different writers' stories about Ecuador. It provides a fantastic overview to the history and culture of the country. Many of the stories were originally written in Spanish and sometimes the translation was not so great, making them difficult to read. However, as a collection, this is by far the best introduction to this fantastic country that I've ever seen. It provided lots of insight and perspective that no travel guide could ever hope to provide.

The book thoughtfully covers many topics on Ecuador. My father is very impressed with the book, and he is a very demanding reader as he was born in Ecuador but has been in the United States for more than 50 years. The book sat on the coffee table and my father initially scoffed at it, then became interested and finally admitted that it is a well written and informative book. The book is too detailed for a quick read. I read sections at random, and have yet to be disappointed by the writing.

I needed a thorugh simple to understand guide in the event I would be moving to Ecuador, and this product met my every expectation by giving me information that was simple to comprehend and complete. I can honestly say this because the information was corroborated with information from several other guides, but this text incorporated it all in one. Even if I wasn't planning a vacation or move, the guide provided a valuble history/political science text. Students of Latin American history will find this book a very valuable tool in their studies. The author did a remarkable job of conveying needed information.

The first collection I've found - in English - written by, rather than about, Ecuadorian writers, musicians, historians and ploiticians. Fascinating! The more so since we recently bought a small plot of land high up in the mountains that is right across the street from the railroad station from which tiny trains used to take tourists up to the infamous Devil's Nose. The current government is planning to repair the line and make it part of a tourist loop through this incredible part of Ecuador.

From Pre-Colombian history to modern day recipes, this book has it all. Definitely an intellectual read, it covers Ecuardor's people and history in depth. The book covers indigenous issues, afro-ecuadorian history, poetry, fiction, mountaineering, the Panama Hat, the banana and oil booms, and so much more. I felt like I really understood the country as a whole after I read this book.

A very interesting look at Ecuador from many different angles. Unfortunately, if your primary interest is the history of the country, jumping from one topic to another obscures the flow of the history narrative.

My 2.5yr old granddaughter likes them, but for some reason I didn't realize how small they are. You disassemble the book for use (just open up the staples), so that the inside of the cover becomes the removable sticker surface. They DO come in super handy for a stressful situation where you need to redirect attention elsewhere: I bought a lot of the different ones, and her mom keeps some in her diaper bag when she needs one! They ARE adorable, and make for lovely make-believe play. I just wish the stickers/books were larger, so little hands would have less trouble. Like at the airport when she was getting tired, we used the Airport stickers. Cute.

ok

for my smallest grandchild who loves to dig in the dirt

Excellent value, and can keep young children entertained for a few minutes. Now these books are small--but that's kind of the point of these book, I think. They're portable, easy to throw in a briefcase or purse or back of the car, and handy to give to children at the doctor's office waiting room, or in an airport, or on a car trip, or at a restaurant waiting for food, or really, just anywhere where you want to have a short educational (or semi-educational) activity. And I gotta admit, I like that this is an "un-plugged" option. Not on a phone or tablet or screen--just a good old-fashioned book with simple activities, vivid illustrations, and things to *do*--that is, an active, tactile experience--even if the activities are quite simple (like peeling stickers). We don't leave home without a few of these. (Just be prepared, if you haven't ordered these before, for a small booklet, not a *book* book.)

Wonderful Dover sticker book: my 2-year-old granddaughter likes to water plants, so she was thrilled! The books are inexpensive, the stickers are colorful and fun, and all peel off easily.

Great little sticker book, good price. The kids in my community center's gardening class loved these. I used them as a bribe to get them to weed :)

Our 3 year old granddaughter loves the pictures but these books are so small that you can't really fit all the reusable stickers on the pages.

The Dover Little Activity Books are the best. Fun for the kids, and very affordable.

Review

A very fine book on human nature, both what it is and what philosophers have thought about it--philosophers in an inclusive sense, from Plato and Aristotle to Mengzi and Xunzi, from Hume and Kant to Ibn al-Arabi to Marx and Rousseau and including many others. The writing is lively and accessible, the philosophy insightful, and the sense of human possibilities conveyed admirable. It will fit nicely into many different sorts of classes. --John Perry, Stanford University

I find this text very good and comprehensive for an introductory level course to introduce students to some major theories. The first two chapters are great for setting the stage for what philosophy is. --Patricia Murphy, Saint Joseph's University
